CLOVIS, CALIF. — Protesters gathered across the street from Buchanan High School in Clovis, Calif., on May 29, 2026, during the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) state track and field championships to oppose the participation of transgender athletes in girls' sports. The demonstration occurred as Jurupa Valley senior AB Hernandez competed in three events at the championships for the second consecutive year.

The CIF adopted Policy 300D in 2013, which allows transgender athletes to compete in sports consistent with their gender identity. For the second straight year, the federation has implemented a rule permitting an additional competitor to receive a medal in events where a transgender athlete places.

Sophia Laurie, outreach director for the California Family Council, said, "Throughout this month alone, Californians have watched three different male athletes compete in girls’ CIF track and field events. Today, at the CIF state championships, once again, a male athlete is expected to take a top spot in three girls events. The message being sent to female athletes is clear: Your opportunities, your records, your placements and hard work comes second to males."

Diane Pearce, Clovis Mayor Pro Tem, said at the press conference, "CIF continues to allow boys to compete against our girls. When our girls express how uncomfortable they are with boys in their locker rooms and in their sports, they are told they are the problem, and are bullied into silence and humiliated." She also said, "I call on President Trump to lower the boom on these losers who have failed our girls."

Trevor Norcross of the GALA Pride and Diversity Center said, "What's clear this is not about sports in fairness. These individuals don't believe transgender people exist." He added, "AB Hernandez is competing as a ghost in these championships. She is not a full-fledged athlete in these championships. If she wins, she will not be recognized as the single winner."

A 2023 study from the City University of New York states that while there are noted differences between male and female athletes, there are also wide physiological variations among athletes of the same sex, and that excluding transgender athletes from competition in their gender identity undermines the skill and talent of all athletes.
