CARDIFF — Wales was the only part of the United Kingdom to see net pub openings in early 2026, while 161 pubs closed nationally during the first quarter of the year. At least six new pubs and taphouses have opened in Wales in recent months, including three that launched in the first quarter.

Nationwide, pub closures rose 26% compared to the same period in 2025, resulting in the loss of approximately 2,400 jobs, according to the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA). The Pig & Swill in Cardiff, Vicino in Cardiff, and The Nelson in Rhyl opened in April and May 2026, contributing to Wales’ divergence from the broader U.K. trend.

Lewis Dwyer and Andy Aston, owners of the Pig & Swill, also operate Hiraeth, a Michelin Guide-listed restaurant located across the street. Dwyer said diners at Hiraeth often asked where they could go for a nightcap, but there was no nearby recommendation. “Dwyer and Aston wanted to provide the neighborhood with a quality pub that would complement Hiraeth and Victoria Park,” he said.

The pair funded part of the Pig & Swill’s refit through a Kickstarter campaign that raised £29,000 and performed most of the renovation work themselves. “Business has been really good since we opened a few weekends ago. We are really blown away by the positive reception and how the community has responded to us,” Dwyer said. He added, “Maybe it’s because we [Welsh people] love the sesh.”

Annie Harding, 55, contributed to the Kickstarter campaign and later visited the pub to redeem her voucher. “It’s great to be able to support a local business,” she said.

Despite the new pub openings, Wales’ broader hospitality industry continues to face challenges. According to David Chapman, executive director of UK Hospitality Cymru, the sector has seen more restaurant and hotel closures than openings. Chapman said the new Welsh government has an opportunity to support hospitality businesses. He added, “Reforming business rates and easing cost pressures will be critical for hospitality venues in Wales.”
