LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Dodgers made multiple roster moves on Wednesday, re-signing infielder Santiago Espinal, optioning utility player Hyeseong Kim to Triple-A Oklahoma City, and calling up infielder Alex Freeland and outfielder Ryan Ward to replace injured players Kiké Hernández and Teoscar Hernández.

Kiké Hernández was placed back on the injured list with a torn left oblique, ending his return after missing the first 53 games of the season while rehabbing from left elbow surgery. Teoscar Hernández was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain after suffering a Grade 1 injury while running out a groundout in the third inning. Before the injury, Teoscar Hernández had hit .364/.419/.600 with three home runs and four doubles over his previous 16 games.

To fill the vacancies, the Dodgers selected Freeland and Ward from Triple-A Oklahoma City. Freeland, who batted .235/.309/.337 in 112 plate appearances at Triple-A, recorded 4 Defensive Runs Saved and 3 Outs Above Average. Ward posted a .254 average with six home runs and 31 RBIs in 47 games for Oklahoma City. Their promotions coincided with Kim’s optioning after he hit .259 in 43 major league games but struggled in May with a .226/.279/.274 slash line and increased swing-and-miss rates.

Los Angeles also re-signed Espinal after he cleared waivers on Wednesday. Espinal had been designated for assignment on Monday. In 26 games this season, he compiled a .220/.238/.366 slash line while playing second and third base. To make room for him on the 40-man roster, pitcher Blake Snell was transferred to the 60-day injured list following arthroscopic surgery on May 19 to remove loose bodies from his left elbow; he is not eligible to return until July 11 at the earliest.

“With a star-studded team, you also have to have guys that know their roles. Espy is a guy that is good on the team, understands his value, is ready when called upon, and I trust him defensively,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. Of Kim’s recent performance, Roberts said, “I think his swing has changed. I think he’s losing his legs a little bit, and he’s coming around the ball a little. There’s a lot more swing and miss than there was early. I think he is just playing a little bit more tentative, to my eyes, and not as free and easy as he was in some parts of last year and early on.” Roberts added, “I like him versus left-handed pitching. I think having him back is pretty seamless too, because we only lost him for a few days.” He also said, “He should be able to bunt and be more dynamic. Unfortunately, it just hasn’t happened right now but the thought is that it’ll happen with some more playing time. Him on the roster adds a different dynamic to our club.”
