BLANCO, TEXAS — The Blanco Post Office on 4th Street temporarily suspended service at the end of business on Friday, May 29, 2025, after its lease expired on May 31. Starting June 1, retail and post office box services for Blanco relocated to the Johnson City Post Office at 201 S. Avenue G, 14 miles away.

All mail not picked up by 4:30 p.m. on May 29 was secured and moved to Johnson City. Current P.O. box numbers and addresses remain the same, and mail delivery to street addresses in Blanco is unaffected. Customers can open new boxes or request refunds at the Johnson City location, where the P.O. box lobby is accessible 24/7 via a self-service kiosk.

Blanco Mayor Candy Cargill said most residents did not receive notice of the move until Wednesday, May 27. “It's been an experience that a lot of people weren't ready for, a 52-card pickup,” she said. She added residents are feeling “a combination of confusion, anger and frustration.”

Jim Bundick, President of Outlaw Lumber & Hardware, said the post office is critical to his business, which mails 280–300 statements monthly and receives payments in its P.O. box. “Taking an hour out of the day to check your mail and pick up payments, that's another hour I didn't have time for already. It is frustrating to say the least,” he said. He noted the hardware store sold a dozen mailboxes in three days after the announcement—far more than the six to ten it typically sells in a year.

Bundick also said travel time to Johnson City can increase significantly due to Hill Country traffic, especially on weekends. A U.S. Postal Service spokesperson said Friday there are no updates on efforts to secure a new Blanco location or a timeline for reopening. Cargill said she has contacted federal and state lawmakers and hopes a temporary post office can be established within six months.
