MENLO PARK, CALIFORNIA — Meta's Reality Labs unit lost more than $19 billion in 2025, bringing the division's total losses to more than $80 billion. The company plans to launch another set of glasses in the next two years designed to let users stream movies at home.

Reality Labs develops hardware products including the Quest virtual reality goggles and the Ray-Ban AI glasses. Mark Zuckerberg wore the Orion prototype onstage in 2024.

In 2021, Mark Zuckerberg described the future as involving living in virtual space with virtual reality goggles and digital avatars in the metaverse. At that time, Zuckerberg aimed to develop devices that would replace smartphones.

On October 28, 2021, Facebook Inc. changed its corporate name to Meta Platforms. Companies have invested about $100 billion in metaverse-related projects.

Meta announced plans to end operations of the Horizon Worlds VR platform but reversed its decision after receiving user feedback. Horizon Worlds VR is a virtual reality platform developed by Meta.

Mark Zuckerberg now publicly focuses on artificial intelligence and on ambitions to build superintelligence. Meta is investing in artificial intelligence talent and data center infrastructure.
