AUSTIN — Waymo LLC registered 577 autonomous vehicles in Texas following the implementation of a new state law that took effect on May 28, 2026. The law requires companies testing or deploying autonomous vehicles in the state to register with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles and disclose fleet size and safety information.

Under the new regulations, companies using autonomous vehicles to transport passengers or cargo must obtain authorization from the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. To receive this authorization, entities must certify compliance with state and federal laws, equip vehicles with a recording device, ensure minimal risk during system failures, properly title and register each vehicle, and maintain insurance coverage.

Waymo LLC is listed as a company with active authorization to operate autonomous vehicles in Texas, according to the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles. The department maintains a public automated vehicle tracker tool that displays registered autonomous vehicle fleets, including Waymo’s reported total of 577 vehicles.

Waymo launched its commercial robotaxi service in Austin in March 2025 and later expanded operations to Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. Earlier in May 2026, the company temporarily paused operations in some Texas cities due to challenges related to how its vehicles respond to flood conditions.

The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles confirmed that all companies operating autonomous vehicles for passenger or cargo transport must meet the state’s authorization requirements before commencing service. These requirements include maintaining liability insurance and ensuring each vehicle is properly titled and registered in Texas.

According to the DMV’s public automated vehicle tracker, Waymo is one of several companies currently authorized to operate autonomous vehicles in the state. The tracker provides real-time updates on fleet sizes and registration status for all registered entities.
