WASHINGTON — FCA US is recalling 419,035 2022–2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L vehicles due to a software glitch in the occupant restraint controller module. The recall affects vehicles produced between May 16, 2022, and October 9, 2025.

The software flaw could cause side airbag pressure sensors to remain active longer than intended, which may deplete sensor life. A degraded sensor might lead to delayed deployment of the side airbag during certain crashes, increasing the risk of injury. The defect may also render the vehicles noncompliant with federal safety regulations.

Consumers may not observe warning signs before the fault occurs. Once the issue is present, however, the airbag warning light remains illuminated and a chime sounds each time the vehicle is started.

FCA US first became aware of the defect in February 2023 after receiving a small number of warranty claims related to door airbag pressure sensors. According to a May 21, 2024, recall notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, about 1% of the recalled vehicles are suspected to have the defect.

Owners of affected vehicles will be notified starting the week of June 11, 2024, to visit dealerships for a free software update that corrects the problem. Vehicle owners can check whether their vehicle is included in the recall by entering their VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
