BEIJING — Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir held extensive meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Qiang, and Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing in May 2024. The visit resulted in new agreements under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and the issuance of a joint statement reinforcing strategic cooperation across economic, military, and diplomatic domains.

During the visit, a series of memoranda of understanding were signed, focusing on new phases of CPEC, trade enhancement, technology sharing, agriculture, and renewable energy. Additional projects related to connectivity and industrial zones remain under discussion between the two countries.

Chinese President Xi Jinping called China’s partnership with Pakistan “unbreakable.” He said, “No matter how the international situation changes, China always prioritises the development of China-Pakistan relations in its neighbourhood diplomacy.” Xi also noted, “I know that you have just returned from Iran and made positive efforts for the current peace,” and appreciated Pakistan’s “constructive role” in U.S.-Iran negotiations. Both nations reaffirmed support for each other on issues concerning their respective core interests.

The joint statement outlined expanded CPEC development plans and emphasized counter-terrorism cooperation to protect CPEC projects and personnel. It also reflected a commitment to link economic, military, and diplomatic dimensions of the bilateral relationship more closely.

China reiterated that the Jammu and Kashmir dispute is a historical issue to be resolved peacefully in accordance with the UN Charter, relevant Security Council resolutions, and bilateral agreements.

Pakistan expressed support for President Xi’s Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative, Global Civilization Initiative, and Global Governance Initiative. The joint statement also included an agreement that both sides oppose any attempt to revive fascism and militarism and affirmed the need to uphold the victorious outcome of World War II.

Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir flew directly from Tehran to join Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Beijing. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held separate discussions with Munir during the visit. The meetings occurred as Pakistan and China mark 75 years of diplomatic relations, which were established in 1951.
