COSBY — A house fire destroyed Kimberly Wood's home in Cosby, Tennessee, leaving her with only the clothes she was wearing and a necklace containing her husband’s ashes. The fire, which filled the home with smoke quickly, also damaged neighboring houses.

Wood escaped in the middle of the night wearing pajamas, house slippers, and the necklace. "Just my PJs, my house slippers and my necklace — my husband’s ashes." The fire is believed to have started from a candle.

Wood and her family spent Friday sorting through the remains of the home. Some family photographs and memories survived the blaze. A smoke alarm startled her cat during the fire, causing it to run and hide; Wood believes the cat died in the flames.

Wood lost her husband Charlie to cancer three years ago and her son Travis nearly 20 years ago at age 25. She said she often feels her husband’s presence through signs like feathers and had felt compelled to wear the necklace containing his ashes just days before the fire.

"Nothing is going to be the same. I just have to find my normal."

Family and friends are assisting Wood with the recovery process. A GoFundMe has been created to support her rebuilding efforts.
