MIAMI GARDENS — The Miami Dolphins announced the death of former defensive tackle Manny Fernandez on Tuesday. Fernandez was 79 years old. “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Manny Fernandez,” the Dolphins said in a statement, “a member of the 1972 perfect team, a two-time Super Bowl champion, ring of honor member and an anchor of the Dolphins’ legendary ‘No-Name Defense.’” No cause of death was announced.

Fernandez played his entire eight-year NFL career with the Miami Dolphins after signing as an undrafted free agent out of Utah in 1968. He became a key pillar of the team’s “No-Name Defense,” which helped the Dolphins reach three consecutive Super Bowls from 1971 to 1973. Miami won back-to-back Super Bowls in 1972 and 1973, completing the NFL’s only perfect season in 1972 with a 17-0 record. “His consistent and selfless contributions on the field were instrumental to the Dolphins’ success throughout the early 1970s, particularly in the team’s three consecutive Super Bowl appearances, in which he produced some of the most memorable defensive performances in the history of the game,” the team said.

Fernandez was especially dominant in the Dolphins’ Super Bowl win over Washington following the undefeated 1972 season. His performance drew praise even from teammates. “They weren’t double-teaming Manny, which most of the other teams we played in the division did during the season,” he said. “Manny was in their backfield the whole day just doing whatever he wanted to do. Maybe I should have shared the MVP with Manny.”

Although Fernandez never received the individual accolades of some of his more celebrated teammates—including quarterback Bob Griese, linebacker Nick Buoniconti, and running back Larry Csonka—he is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of the nose tackle position in the NFL. His impact on the Dolphins’ defensive identity during their championship era remained a defining part of the team’s legacy.

In 2014, Fernandez was inducted into the Dolphins’ Ring of Honor, cementing his place among the franchise’s all-time greats. “Our thoughts are with his family, loved ones and teammates as we remember one of the best players in Dolphins history,” the team said.
