SCOTLAND — Two individuals were charged Thursday after attempting to enter HM Naval Base Clyde, the U.K.'s nuclear submarine base in Scotland. The suspects are a 34-year-old Iranian man and a 31-year-old Romanian woman.

The pair were detained Thursday after trying to gain entry to the naval facility. They are scheduled to appear at Dumbarton Sheriff Court on Monday.

Police Scotland did not release the suspects' names or the specific charges they face before their court hearing.

HM Naval Base Clyde, also known as Faslane, is located about 40 miles (64 kilometers) northwest of Glasgow in Scotland. The base serves as home to the core of the U.K.'s submarine fleet, including vessels that carry nuclear weapons.

Britain has been a nuclear power since the 1950s. Since the 1990s, the U.K.'s nuclear deterrent has consisted of four Royal Navy submarines armed with Trident missiles.
