AUSTIN — A fire at the Burl North apartments in southeast Austin killed three Lucero children—10-year-old Aniyah, 7-year-old Athena, and 5-year-old Jeremy—just before 1 a.m. on March 11. More than two months later, the Lucero family continues to seek answers, as investigators have not determined the fire's cause.

Austin Fire Department crews responded to the blaze off Burleson Road and later combed the scene, conducted interviews, and consulted with Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives personnel and private fire investigators hired by involved parties. Despite those efforts, no definitive cause has been established.

"Now they're trying to rebuild. A family of 6 to a family of 3. And we just want answers. I know right now, there's not any. But we wanna make sure it doesn't fall on the wayside," Veronica Lucero, the children's grandmother, said in a press conference in front of city hall Thursday morning.

"Right now, we are simply seeking answers. We want to understand how this happened and whether anything could have been done to prevent it," said Desiree Vazquez, the children's aunt. Community groups including LULAC Austin, the local chapter of the NAACP, and Austin Justice Coalition are supporting the Lucero family. "The Lucero family needs answers of how this fire happened and how they lost their children. Until this day, we still don't have the answers and we're calling on city officials to give us answers," said Bertha Rendon Ortiz, LULAC Austin deputy director. The property managers for Burl North declined to comment but offered condolences to the Lucero family.
