LAKEWOOD — Eight-year-old Madeline Glynn of Lakewood, Ohio, received a signed guitar and a handwritten letter from Taylor Swift after sending a paper airplane note to her neighbor asking him to play Swift’s music. The gesture followed a moment in which 26-year-old musician Ethan Hayes played “Love Story” at Madeline’s request, with Madeline singing along to every word.

Madeline’s mother recorded the interaction and shared the video, which has since been viewed nearly 4 million times. The story gained national attention, appearing in People Magazine and on “The Today Show.” Taylor Swift’s team, Taylor Nation, contacted Hayes after seeing the video and later delivered a package to both Hayes and Madeline.

“My mom saw the letter, and she started screaming, and so did I,” Madeline Glynn said. “I noticed that she signed it, and then I started screaming even more. My favorite, favorite part was her perfume she sprayed on it.” The letter was addressed “Dearest Madeline” and signed with a falling star next to Swift’s name.

Hayes, who was recovering from knee surgery at his parents’ home, also received a guitar and a note from Swift. “Ethan, I wanted to send you a note to say thank you so much for playing my song for your neighbor and for knowing Love Story,” Swift wrote. “It was so sweet watching the video of how it played out. Thank you for the smile it brought to my face. Sending you another guitar in case you need a backup. Love, Taylor.”

“I got the note and I read it, and at the end she said, ‘Sending you another guitar in case you need a backup,’” Ethan Hayes said. “And I looked at my mom and went, ‘Are you kidding me?’ I was like, ‘What?’ I'm usually not a guy that's, like, lost for words, but I was, like, speechless.” He added that Swift had sprayed her perfume on the envelope. “She smells really good,” Hayes said. “It's hard out there for a lot of people recently. Hopefully it can inspire them to be nice. It costs nothing to be nice.” He also told Madeline, “If you ever want to learn, you let me know. I'm right there.”
