SEGUIN — Katrina Wheeler, 35, was fatally shot in the parking lot of a Walmart located at 550 S. Highway 123 Bypass in Seguin, Texas, on Thursday afternoon. Seguin Police responded to reports of shots fired at 4:50 p.m. and found Wheeler dead at the scene.

The shooting occurred entirely outside in the parking lot, with between seven and ten shots fired, according to Seguin Police Lieutenant Mike McCann. A 37-year-old Seguin man was also shot and airlifted to a San Antonio hospital; his condition was unknown at the time of reporting.

Police identified the suspect as John Wheeler, 42, of Seguin, who fled the scene before officers arrived. His vehicle was located outside the city by the New Berlin Marshal’s Office just before 5:30 p.m., prompting a multi-agency response.

A low-speed pursuit ended in the 3000 block of FM 775, where John Wheeler was taken into custody. Assisting agencies included the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office, the Texas Game Wardens, the Texas Department of Public Safety, the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office, the New Berlin Marshal’s Office, and the Texas Rangers.

At the time of his statement, McCann said police did not know what led to the shooting. Detectives were reviewing surveillance video provided by Walmart as part of the investigation.

The Walmart store was closed Thursday evening during the ongoing investigation. Authorities asked residents to avoid the area and use alternate routes to allow first responders to work safely while the scene remained active.
