KERR COUNTY — The Texas Board of Nursing temporarily suspended Mary Liz Eastland's nursing license on May 19, 2025, following her failure to report 27 deaths and other violations tied to the July 4, 2025 floods at Camp Mystic in Kerr County, Texas. The board later reinstated her license under restrictions prohibiting direct patient care and work outside Texas under a compact license.

Eastland has served as Camp Mystic’s chief medical officer since 2010 and is a camp director. The board’s order states she failed to ensure the nurse's manual included appropriate emergency planning. It also found she did not contact emergency services via 911 during or after the flood, despite campers and staff being missing, and failed to report the deaths of 25 campers and two counselors within the required 24-hour window. The order cited her for allowing staff nurses to administer medications based on inadequate standing orders.

Eastland waived her right to a hearing and neither admits nor denies the violations. She must complete a board-approved course in Texas nursing jurisprudence and ethics and provide the board’s order to all current and future nursing employers. She may petition to lift the restrictions after completing the training.

In April 2025, Eastland testified in an Austin court that she had not yet reported the deaths to state health regulators. She was also questioned by state legislators about her actions during and after the flood.

While she has no intention of again serving as a camp nurse, Mrs. Eastland remains committed to her professional calling and thanks the Board for that privilege. The families of all those lost to the July 4, 2025 flood will forever remain in Mrs. Eastland’s heart and prayers,” said Joshua Fiveson, attorney for Camp Mystic.
