NEW YORK CITY — Mohammad Al-Saadi was extradited to New York this month to face trial on eight counts related to allegedly orchestrating nearly 20 terrorist attacks and attempted attacks across Europe, Canada, and the U.S. The Iraqi national is accused of ordering attacks on U.S. bank branches, targeting Jewish communities in multiple European cities, and plotting an attack on a New York City synagogue.

According to court documents, Al-Saadi is a commander of Kata’ib Hizballah, a U.S.-designated foreign terrorist organization operating in Iraq. The Justice Department alleges that Al-Saadi “has furthered the terrorist goals of Kata’ib Hizballah and Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps—in or about 2017 and thereafter.” The department said Al-Saadi “has worked closely with senior leaders of both terrorist organizations and, following U.S. airstrikes killing certain of those terrorist leaders, has directed others to exact retribution by killing U.S. citizens and U.S. political and military leaders.”

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said, “As alleged in this indictment, Al-Saadi has been directly involved in terrorist operations and military decisions to attack U.S. and Israeli interests across the world and conspired with others to plan deadly attacks on American soil.” Blanche added, “The Justice Department looks forward to vigorously prosecuting him under American law in an American courtroom.”

According to three sources familiar with the matter, Al-Saadi discussed wanting to target Ivanka Trump as part of a series of attacks, including a possible attack in Florida. The Justice Department did not include any allegations about plans to target Trump in its official indictment or public statements about the case. Neither the White House nor the Secret Service immediately responded to requests for comment, and the FBI and the Justice Department declined to comment on the matter.
