HOUSTON — Storms moved through the Houston area overnight on May 27, 2026, beginning around 1 a.m., prompting CenterPoint Energy to activate its Emergency Operations Center and deploy more than 2,000 frontline personnel and contractors to respond to outages. Between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m., the utility restored power to approximately 56,000 customers.

As of 5 a.m. on May 27, approximately 23,000 CenterPoint Energy customers remained without electricity, though more than 99% of its electric customers had power. “Our Emergency Operations Center is activated and our enhanced workforce of more than 2,000 frontline personnel and contractors will continue working to restore power to all impacted customers,” the company said.

CenterPoint Energy sent more than 48,000 Power Alert Service® messages to customers during the four-hour period as crews worked to address storm-related outages. The company’s network of 150 weather stations recorded widespread wind speeds of up to 38 mph during the storms, with isolated gusts reaching 48 mph. Rainfall in some locations totaled up to 2.65 inches.

Third-party data from Vaisala indicated approximately 6,000 lightning strikes occurred in the Houston area between 12 a.m. and 5 a.m. on May 27. The lightning activity coincided with the onset of the overnight storms that triggered the outages.
