CHICAGO — At least 25 people were shot in Chicago over Memorial Day weekend as part of a citywide Summer Safety Strategy that canceled police days off. There were no confirmed homicides during the holiday weekend.

Chicago Police canceled all officer days off as part of its Summer Safety Strategy to increase police presence across the city. Despite the heightened deployment, multiple shootings occurred, including an incident on the West Side where four teenagers were shot around 3 a.m. Sunday. Police found three female teenagers and one male teenager, aged 14 to 18, with gunshot wounds. All four were taken to a local hospital and listed in good condition. The suspect fled the scene along with other teenagers in the area.

Later Sunday night, a 33-year-old man was shot while driving in the North Austin neighborhood on Chicago’s West Side. An individual in a golden-colored car fired shots at him, striking him in the left thigh. He was taken to a local hospital and is expected to survive. No suspects are in custody in connection with that shooting.

Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling acknowledged the ongoing challenges. “We want to make sure to stop people from being harmed. They should be safe and enjoy our city. Look around, it’s a beautiful city. We want to make sure people can enjoy it.” Snelling added that it might be a rough season.

Mayor Brandon Johnson emphasized community involvement in preventing violence. “I’m counting on our parents and our adults to do more. Know where your children are, know what they’re engaged in.” He noted that the city has laid out a plethora of activities for children through Chicago Public Schools, park districts, and libraries.
