SAN ANTONIO — A late-night fire damaged eight to 12 apartments at the Tigoni Villas Apartments on West Sunshine Drive near Bandera Road in San Antonio on Thursday night. Firefighters responded to the blaze around 10:30 p.m. after it started in the attic of a three-story building at the complex.

According to the fire department, the fire may have been caused by a lightning strike. Everyone inside the building escaped safely, and no injuries were reported. The fire department estimated that eight to 12 apartments sustained damage, primarily from water and severe roof damage caused by the fire.

The Red Cross was called to assist displaced residents. It was unclear early Friday how many people were affected by the fire.

Evette Gill, speaking on behalf of the Moreno family, who had lived in their apartment for the past decade, said, "It wasn’t because of neglect. It wasn’t because they were being irresponsible. It was a freak accident that you literally only see in the news." She added, "We’re looking at a 95% loss of everything. Water damage, soot damage."
