Huffman Independent School District said it is reviewing what it described as “unverified reports” that bullying may have contributed to the suicide of 15-year-old student Ryan Maziol. The district has not confirmed any bullying complaints involving Maziol prior to his death.

Ryan Maziol was autistic and had attended multiple meetings with school officials regarding his educational progress. His mother said she was never informed by Huffman ISD about possible bullying involving her son before his death. The family says they did not learn about possible bullying concerns until after Ryan died by suicide. His sister, Ashley Maziol, found him after he died.

One of Ryan’s friends claimed he told teachers about bullying, but nothing ever changed. Under Texas law, school districts are required to have procedures for reporting, investigating, and responding to bullying complaints. The Texas Education Agency stated that districts must notify parents after bullying reports are made.

Parents and community members planned to protest outside the district’s administration building to demand more transparency and stronger action on bullying reports.
