WASHINGTON — Pam Bondi was diagnosed with thyroid cancer shortly after departing as U.S. Attorney General in early April 2026 and has since undergone surgery while continuing to work, including accepting a role on the Presidential Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST). Bondi left the Department of Justice on April 2 and has remained active professionally despite her diagnosis.

Bondi underwent surgery for thyroid cancer a few weeks ago as part of her treatment. According to the Cleveland Clinic, thyroid cancer has a five-year survival rate of over 98%, and most forms are treatable and permanently curable. The specific stage of Bondi’s cancer has not been disclosed.

Despite her health challenge, Bondi has taken on a new role as a member of PCAST, the Presidential Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. President Donald Trump established PCAST by executive order in January 2025, describing its purpose as to “unite the brightest minds from academia, industry, and government to guide our Nation through this critical moment by charting a path forward for American leadership in science and technology.” Bondi’s appointment marks the first public announcement of her work since leaving the Justice Department.

Bondi wrote on X that she remains “eternally grateful for the trust that President Trump placed in me to Make America Safe Again.” She added, “Over the next month I will be working tirelessly to transition the office of Attorney General to the amazing Todd Blanche before moving to an important private sector role I am thrilled about, and where I will continue fighting for President Trump and this Administration.”

President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social that Bondi is “a Great American Patriot and a loyal friend” and that she would transition to a “much needed and important new job in the private sector.”

David Sacks, White House AI and crypto czar and co-chair of PCAST, wrote on X: “Winning the AI race means not only beating China but also clearing bureaucratic hurdles thrown up by state legislatures and woke politicians in D.C. No one is better positioned to support PCAST in this mission and to advise the president on legal and regulatory barriers than Pam Bondi.” He added, “Excited to have her on board!”
