LONDON — West Ham United confirmed that Nuno Espirito Santo will remain as manager despite the club's relegation from the Premier League. The club was relegated to the Championship for the first time since 2012 after finishing the season in 18th place.

Nuno met with West Ham’s senior management on Monday following the conclusion of the Premier League season. Both parties had the option to terminate his contract without compensation but elected to continue their partnership. The club cited “clear improvement in squad mentality and togetherness since January” as a key factor in the decision to retain him.

West Ham acknowledged that their season “has not been good enough” but pointed to a strong finish as evidence of progress. The team earned 25 points from their final 17 league matches, a rate of 1.47 points per game. The club stated that such a points-per-game ratio across a full season would have yielded a seventh-place finish.

“While the ultimate outcome on Sunday was a painful one, the board of directors believe that there have been broader signs of improvement and progress in recent months, and we want Nuno to continue developing that progress,” West Ham United said. The club added, “We are pleased to confirm he has expressed his continued commitment to the club – as we have to him.”

Nuno previously managed Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Championship during the 2017–18 season, leading them to promotion with a 99-point title campaign. His experience in the second tier includes working with players such as Ruben Neves and Diogo Jota, who were central to that effort.

West Ham faces financial consequences from relegation, with club sources estimating a £200 million loss in revenue. The club reported a loss of more than £100 million in its latest financial accounts, with additional losses expected for the current season. Player departures, including potential sales of Jarrod Bowen and Mateus Fernandes, are considered inevitable as the club adjusts to life in the Championship.

Graham Potter was dismissed as West Ham manager in September before Nuno took over. Nuno made it very clear that he is highly motivated for the challenge of guiding West Ham United back to the top flight at the first time of asking. That must be the unquestionable goal for next season.
