MADRID — Spanish police searched the headquarters of the ruling Socialist Party in Madrid as part of an ongoing judicial investigation into possible financial wrongdoing. The search was conducted under judicial orders to gather material relevant to a National Court probe into corruption allegations against a former party member who had been involved in a state-run company, the Civil Guard said.

The investigation centers on the former member’s activities within the state-owned entity and does not directly implicate current party leadership in wrongdoing. Authorities have not disclosed the identity of the former member or specific allegations beyond the connection to the public company.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who has been prime minister since 2018, is not named as a subject in this particular case. In 2025, he asked the nation for “forgiveness” over a separate corruption case involving former associates.

Sánchez has also called other legal cases involving his family a “smear campaign.” He made the remark in reference to investigations that are distinct from the probe prompting the search of the party’s headquarters. Judicial authorities have emphasized that the current investigation is limited in scope to the actions of the former party member linked to the state-run company.
