FREEPORT — Donald R. Tune, former men’s basketball coach and athletic director at Highland Community College, has died. Memorial services are scheduled for May 30 in Freeport, Illinois.

Tune coached the Highland Community College men’s basketball team from 1967 to 1971 and again from 1980 to 1993. He also served as the college’s athletic director before retiring. An announcement described him as known for his dedication to student-athletes and his passion for sports. "Through leadership, compassion, and unwavering dedication to student-athletes, he inspired generations both on and off the court," the announcement said.

Before his tenure at Highland, Tune coached and taught in Flint, Michigan; Joliet, Illinois; and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He also spent 3½ years in the U.S. Air Force, including a deployment to Japan.

Tune is survived by his wife, Sandra; two children, Tara and Jason; and his sister, Kathy. He enjoyed golf and was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan.

A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on May 30 at Walker Mortuary, located at 321 West Main Street in Freeport. A semi-formal sharing of stories will follow at noon at the same location. A reception is planned for approximately 1:30 p.m. the same day at the Wagner House, 1 East Spring Street in Freeport.

Tune’s impact extended beyond wins and losses, as he prioritized character development and academic success for his players, according to the community announcement. His coaching philosophy emphasized discipline, teamwork, and personal responsibility. During his time as athletic director, Tune supported the growth of multiple sports programs at Highland Community College and mentored numerous assistant coaches who went on to lead their own teams.
