ROME — Ferrari unveiled its first battery-electric, four-door, five-seater sedan—the Luce—in Rome in 2026. The vehicle marks Ferrari’s debut in the electric car market and represents a departure from its traditional two-door sports cars.

The Luce produces a peak combined output of 1,035 hp (772 kW) from four electric radial flux motors and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (60 mph) in 2.5 seconds. It is powered by a 122 kWh battery pack operating at 800 V and supports DC charging at up to 350 kW, capable of adding 70 kWh in 20 minutes. Ferrari targets a 330-mile (530 km) range under Europe’s WLTP test in its most efficient configuration.

Ferrari president John Elkann presented the Luce to Italy’s President and Pope Leo XIV, who sat in the driver’s seat at his summer residence in Castel Gandolfo. “Is this the first four-door Ferrari?” Pope Leo XIV asked Elkann. “The first five-seater,” Elkann replied. Raffaele De Simone, a Ferrari test driver, explained the steering wheel’s controls in English to the pope.

Elkann said the launch marks a new chapter for the brand. “We are not simply unveiling a new car, we are inaugurating a chapter that turns our vision into reality, strengthening Ferrari’s tradition of anticipating and shaping the future,” he said in a media appearance.

Critics offered measured assessments. Matt Prior, editor-at-large of Autocar, said the Luce’s interior is well done but the vehicle doesn’t “shout Ferrari.” He noted that the absence of an engine and the placement of the battery under the floor make the Luce taller and less sleek than traditional Ferraris.

The Luce features a dash machined from a single piece of brushed aluminum and includes Apple CarPlay on its pivot-mounted infotainment screen. Its four round tail lights reference 1990s Ferrari models like the 360 and 550, and its exterior design was developed in collaboration with design firm LoveFrom, led by Jony Ive and Marc Newson. Initial aerodynamic studies began seven years before the 2026 unveiling, involving 6,000 computational fluid dynamics simulations and over 300 hours of wind tunnel testing.
