KANSAS CITY — Patrick Mahomes participated in the Kansas City Chiefs' first voluntary offseason training activity (OTA) of 2026 on May 26, 2026, as he continues his recovery from a torn ACL and LCL sustained on December 14, 2025, during a game against the Chargers—the most serious injury of his career. He wore a brace on his left knee and a leg sleeve during the session, and video posted by the Chiefs on social media showed him taking snaps and throwing passes.

Mahomes underwent surgery on December 15, 2025, in Dallas to repair ligaments in his left knee. Since then, he has conducted his 2026 offseason rehabilitation at the Chiefs’ practice facility under the supervision of longtime trainer Julie Frymyer, opting not to hold player-led workouts in Texas. The quarterback reposted the OTA video on X with his signature clock emoji, signaling his ongoing progress. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid commented on Mahomes’ status in May 2026, saying, “He’s in a good position to do some things.” Reid added, “He’s throwing the ball, and he does it on his own, so he’s not getting in any trouble here.” Although OTAs on May 26 and 27 were closed to reporters, with media access scheduled to begin May 28, ESPN’s Nate Taylor reported that Mahomes participated in the opening OTA.

Mahomes is expected to be ready to start the Chiefs’ Week 1 game against the Denver Broncos on September 14, 2026. The team finished the 2025 season with a 6–11 record and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2014. Mahomes, a two-time NFL MVP and three-time Super Bowl MVP, previously returned quickly from injuries, including a dislocated kneecap in October 2019 that sidelined him for two games and a high ankle sprain during the 2022 playoffs that caused him to miss one offensive series.
