ATLANTA — A woman was struck and killed by a fleeing driver in Atlanta on Memorial Day afternoon after a high-speed chase involving Georgia State troopers. The incident occurred when 26-year-old Fre’shun Tyai White of Marietta, Georgia, lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a gas station parking lot, striking 51-year-old Chatanna Ohiyesha Patterson as she stood beside a parked car.

At approximately 2:40 p.m., a Georgia State trooper attempted to stop White’s Hyundai Elantra on Interstate 20 in Fulton County for speeding—traveling 90 mph in a 55 mph zone. White initially slowed but then accelerated, crossing all lanes of westbound Interstate 20 before exiting onto the Boulevard ramp. He abruptly merged back onto the interstate, nearly causing a collision.

Before another trooper could catch up, White exited at high speed onto the Hill Street ramp. Investigators believe he lost control, crossed Hill Street, and entered the gas station lot, where his vehicle struck the parked car next to which Patterson was standing. Patterson suffered fatal injuries, while White, a passenger in his vehicle, and the driver of the parked car were all seriously injured and transported to Grady Hospital.

White has been charged with first-degree vehicular homicide, serious injury by vehicle, and other related charges.
