FERRIS — Seven-year-old Treshawn Moore was fatally shot in an accidental shooting in Ferris, Texas, on Saturday when a very young child accessed a firearm inside a residence in the Shaw Creek neighborhood near Tidwell Drive. Police said the incident occurred after the child gained access to the weapon, resulting in Treshawn's death.

Treshawn was identified by his family through a GoFundMe page, which described him as a boy who loved playing video games, spending time with family and friends, and playing football. Authorities took 24-year-old Takievon Holmes into custody in connection with the shooting. Holmes has been charged with tampering with physical evidence and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, and additional charges are under review.

The Ferris Department of Public Safety is leading the investigation alongside the Texas Rangers, the Ellis County Sheriff's Office, and the Ellis County District Attorney's Office. Officials confirmed the investigation remains active.

City Manager Dr. Brooks Williams said, "This is an unimaginable tragedy, and when a child loses their life, the impact reaches far beyond one home or one street." He also said, "Our focus remains on the family, the integrity of the investigation, and the responsibility we all have to treat firearm safety with the seriousness it deserves. Firearms must be secured, they must be kept away from children, and adults must understand that a moment of carelessness can create consequences that can never be undone."

The department said, "Safe storage is not simply a recommendation, it is a responsibility, and it is one of the most basic steps adults can take to protect children inside a home." The department also said, "Our hearts are with the child, the family, and everyone impacted by this devastating loss."
