MARIUPOL — Ukraine's 1st Azov Corps on May 8 released drone footage showing reconnaissance and strike drones flying over occupied Mariupol, with the unit saying its drones are operating as far as 160 kilometers behind the front line. The footage captured roads, industrial sites and military facilities used by Russian forces in the city, which has been under Russian occupation for four years.

The unit described the drone operation as a "patrol" over Mariupol and said strike distances would continue to increase. The unit wrote on social media: "There is no safe rear area for the occupiers. There is nowhere to hide and no way to protect themselves. But there is more to come."

Mariupol sits at the center of Russia's southern logistics corridor linking occupied Donbas to Crimea, through which supplies, fuel and troops move. Since 2022, Russia has invested in roads, rail links and infrastructure around the Azov coast to reduce dependence on the Kerch Bridge. Moscow has also built new apartment blocks in Mariupol and encouraged Russians to settle there. Russia reduced the city to ruins during its siege in 2022, and satellite imagery later revealed mass graves outside Mariupol.

Ukrainian forces are working to make the land corridor unsafe. Russia stores fuel, ammunition and reserves in a mid-range zone roughly 30 to 300 kilometers behind the front, concentrating roads and railways there to sustain frontline operations.

Dmytro Kavun of Dignitas Ukraine said the most important targets lie in that mid-range zone. He said communications between drones and operators have improved and that Ukrainian strikes have degraded Russian air defenses, opening corridors for deeper attacks. Kavun said Ukraine could potentially produce seven million drones this year.

Domestic production gives Ukraine greater operational freedom, as Western-supplied drone systems often come with restrictions on how and where they may be used, while Ukrainian-built drones do not.

Romanov, a pro-war commentator, said Ukrainian drones operating through Starlink can strike logistics routes up to 200 kilometers away. "Within six months to a year, we will very likely encounter fully automated Hornets or other drones that won't be jammed with EW. The drone will simply fly into a specific area and then circle around until it selects a target, which the neural network prioritizes," Romanov wrote.
