New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani reduced the city's budget deficit from $12 billion to $5.4 billion through savings and reserve use in less than three months in office. He inherited the $12 billion deficit when he took office and aims to eliminate it entirely in the coming weeks and months.

On day eight of his term, Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul announced $1.2 billion in funding for a pathway to universal childcare. He also proposed creating a Department of Community Safety with a $1 billion budget. He consolidated previously separate city offices into a single portfolio to address mental health, gun violence, hate violence, and gender-based violence.

His fiscal plan includes taxing the wealthiest residents more and rebalancing the relationship between city and state governments. Mamdani has held Oval Office visits with President Donald Trump, and the two share a fondness for New York City.

Mamdani is the first Muslim mayor of New York City and observed fasting during Ramadan while serving in office. He broke his Ramadan fast at Rikers Island, where he prayed alongside incarcerated individuals and staff.

Anti-Muslim protesters demonstrated outside his residence to protest his faith. U.S. Representative Andy Ogles said "Muslims don't belong in American society." U.S. Representative Randy Fine said "We need more Islamophobia, not less." "I think there's an unabashed nature to it, and it is being echoed from the highest offices in this country," Mamdani said.

During his early months in office, nurses went on strike in New York City, and Mamdani stood on the picket line supporting them. The city also experienced its first blizzard in 10 years during his first winter in office.
