WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Secret Service officers shot and killed a suspect who approached a White House checkpoint with a weapon on Saturday, and a bystander was also shot during the incident. Both the suspect and the bystander were in critical condition before the suspect died.

The Secret Service said it was aware of reports of shots fired near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, one block from the White House. The agency said it was working to corroborate information with personnel on the ground and would have an update shortly.

The Metropolitan Police Department said the Secret Service was working the scene and cautioned people to avoid the area. President Donald Trump was inside the White House at the time of the shooting.

FBI Director Kash Patel said in a social media post that officers were responding to shots fired. Patel said he would update the public as he was able.

Journalists working at the White House heard a series of gunshots and were told to seek shelter inside the press briefing room. Selina Wang, a senior White House correspondent, said in a post shared on X that she heard what sounded like dozens of gunshots and ducked for cover during the shooting. Her video, which shows her ducking down in the media tent as the sounds of gunfire were heard, had been shared thousands of times and viewed at least 3 million times on X as of Saturday evening.

Yellow crime scene tape was placed across the pavement on a sidewalk just outside the White House complex. Secret Service officers placed dozens of orange evidence markers on the ground outside the complex. Medical materials, including what appeared to be purple surgical gloves and emergency medical kits, were visible at the shooting scene.
