SAN ANTONIO — The National Council on Problem Gambling urged fans planning to wager on Game 2 of the 2026 NBA Western Conference Finals to treat sports betting as a recreational activity rather than a way to make money. The San Antonio Spurs face the Oklahoma City Thunder at Paycom Arena at 8:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday, with San Antonio attempting to take a 2–0 series lead.
"It's not a replacement for investment. It is a form of entertainment. And that's exactly how it should be treated." said Ryan Butler, a senior editor with sports gambling site Covers. He also encouraged bettors to study the math behind their wagers. "The more information you have, but not only just knowledge about sports, more importantly, knowledge about the odds you're really facing, what you're looking at and the probability with it." Butler said.
Warning signs of a gambling problem include betting on credit cards, borrowing money to fund wagers, or letting gambling interfere with a job, relationships, or personal responsibilities. Beginners are advised to understand how their betting platform operates and how different wager types function, including the money line, the spread, and the over/under.
Bettors should set a strict budget and only gamble what they can afford to lose, stick to a standard bet size such as a set dollar amount or a percentage of their total bankroll, and avoid chasing losses by placing larger wagers to recoup previous ones. Decisions should be based on research and analysis rather than emotion, with bettors seeking the best available odds.
The Spurs took Game 1 of the series 122–115 in double overtime, handing Oklahoma City its first loss of the postseason. Victor Wembanyama scored 41 points and grabbed 24 rebounds, becoming the youngest player in NBA history to record at least 40 points and 20 rebounds in a playoff game at 22 years and 134 days old. Dylan Harper added 24 points and 11 rebounds, and Stephon Castle posted 17 points and 11 assists.
For the Thunder, Alex Caruso scored 31 points off the bench and made 8 of 14 three-point attempts, Jalen Williams added 26 points, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander recorded 24 points and 12 assists one day after winning his second consecutive NBA MVP award. Oklahoma City swept the Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Lakers in the first two rounds of the 2026 NBA Playoffs before falling in Game 1. San Antonio won four of five regular-season meetings between the teams during the 2025-26 season and carried a 5–1 road record into Game 2.
