Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has come out of international retirement to be named in Germany's squad for the 2026 World Cup. Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann included the 124-cap goalkeeper in his 26-man selection for the tournament, which will take place across Canada, Mexico and the United States.

Neuer announced he was ending his international career after Euro 2024, with his final appearance coming in a quarter-final defeat by Spain. He helped Germany win the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and has played in four World Cups. Germany were eliminated at the group stage at both the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

"Everyone knows the aura and quality Manu has, what he brings to a team," Nagelsmann said. "We're planning with him as our number one."

This season, Neuer helped Bayern Munich win the Bundesliga title and reach the Champions League semi-finals. Nagelsmann's selection also included Bayern youngster Lennart Karl, 18, and Galatasaray winger Leroy Sane.

Nagelsmann named five Premier League-based players in the squad: Kai Havertz, Pascal Gross, Florian Wirtz, Malick Thiaw and Nick Woltemade.

The full squad comprises goalkeepers Oliver Baumann, Neuer and Alexander Nubel; defenders Waldemar Anton, Nathaniel Brown, Joshua Kimmich, David Raum, Antonio Rudiger, Nico Schlotterbeck, Jonathan Tah and Thiaw; midfielders Nadiem Amiri, Leon Goretzka, Gross, Jamie Leweling, Jamal Musiala, Felix Nmecha, Aleksandar Pavlovic, Angelo Stiller and Wirtz; and forwards Maximilian Beier, Havertz, Karl, Sane, Deniz Undav and Woltemade. Germany, four-time world champions, open their 2026 campaign against Curacao on 14 June, with their other Group E fixtures against the Ivory Coast and Ecuador.

"We want to become world champions. Every player who is nominated needs to show it now every day," Nagelsmann said.
