SAN ANTONIO — Two staff members at Ayres Halfway House in northeast San Antonio were seriously injured on Mother's Day when juvenile residents attacked them with a porcelain toilet lid and a fire extinguisher. A large contingent of detention and police officers was needed to gain control of the juveniles involved in the attacks.

The first victim, a 41-year-old officer, was struck in the back of the head with a porcelain toilet lid, which broke into pieces on impact. Video evidence confirmed that the lid shattered when it struck him. His head was bleeding, and he was transferred to a hospital, where he received stitches.

After the first victim left the room, one officer remained with 18 juveniles, and at least two of them continued to fight and punch him. The juveniles used other objects to hit the downed officer and sprayed him with the fire extinguisher.

The second victim, a 35-year-old staff member, was hit in the head with the fire extinguisher, suffered multiple skull fractures, and was rendered unconscious. He had facial swelling, was bleeding from his mouth, and reported he could not hear from his right ear.

One of the juveniles spat on the officer placing him in handcuffs during the response. The juveniles involved in the assault are all 16 years old, and their names are not subject to release.

Daniel Flores-Cervantes, a 17-year-old suspect, was booked into the adult jail on a misdemeanor charge of criminal mischief with damages between $750 and $2,500. Bond was set at $3,500. Flores-Cervantes made bond eight days after his arrest by paying 10 percent of the bond amount, $350, plus a processing fee. He has a court-appointed attorney and is scheduled for an arraignment hearing on June 9.
