SAN ANTONIO — University of Oklahoma graduate Dane Carter unzipped his graduation gown at the school's commencement ceremony in Norman and revealed a San Antonio Spurs jersey underneath, drawing boos from the arena crowd. The video of the reveal went viral online and was shared by Sports Illustrated as the Spurs prepared to face the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Finals.

Carter, a native of Fredericksburg, wore an old No. 2 Kawhi Leonard jersey beneath his gown. He had debated between that jersey and a Victor Wembanyama jersey before making his choice. His Wembanyama jersey was a City Edition, which he said did not look like a standard Spurs jersey, so he chose the older Kawhi Leonard one.

He said the timing of the reveal connected to the upcoming playoff matchup. "In a split second I thought, 'Oh, we're about to play the Thunder.' Everybody's been talking all year about how good the Thunder are and I've been hearing it so much because so many of my friends are Thunder fans being from that area," he said.

He said the reaction inside the arena caught him off guard. People immediately began reaching out to him after seeing the video. "That was probably the single day my phone has gone off the most. I had no expectation it would blow up in the way that it did," he said.

Carter said his Spurs fandom began in elementary school and that by the team's 2014 championship run he was watching every game of the season. He was considering attending a Western Conference Finals game and said he had been in communication with groups and people about possibly showing up.
