HOUSTON, TEXAS — Kevin Faux waived his right to a bond hearing at a Harris County criminal court in Houston as he faces a capital murder charge. Faux is accused of killing his girlfriend, Ashanti Allen, and her unborn child.

"He's not interested in having a bond set. He understands he'll remain at no bond, and he absolutely has no problem with that," defense attorney Anthony Osso said, adding that his client desired to waive the bond hearing. Under Texas law, capital murder suspects do not have an automatic right to bond.

Faux was captured near New Orleans by U.S. Marshals nearly a month before the hearing and was later extradited from Louisiana to Harris County, Texas.

Allen, 23, was found along a bayou in Chimney Rock Park days after her family last saw her. According to police, she was strangled, with a cord wrapped tightly around her neck. Her unborn child with Faux had already been named Jaxon at the time of her death.

Weeks before Allen's death, Faux had been given a plea deal for a prior family violence charge that resulted in his early release from jail. Allen's family said they are in favor of the death penalty in the case.

Speaking after the hearing, Allen's mother, Teresa Gaines Colbert, said of the bond waiver, "That was the right thing for him to do."

Colbert also called for changes in how similar cases are handled. "We need to re-evaluate how domestic violence cases are handled. That's the first step we need to do. I reacted, now it's time to proact, so this won't happen to anyone else," she said.
