MONTGOMERY COUNTY — Jon Rueben Demeter was indicted by a Montgomery County grand jury on charges of abortion and injury to a child, the district attorney's office confirmed. The indictment replaced an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge on which Demeter had initially been arrested, the district attorney's office said. The abortion charge is a first-degree felony carrying a punishment of five years to life in prison.

According to the search warrant, Demeter gave a pregnant woman a bottle containing a white milky substance without her knowledge or consent. He told the woman the drink was an electrolyte drink and claimed it had helped the mother of his other children during pregnancy, the warrant states.

The woman began feeling ill later that night, according to the warrant. She subsequently gave birth at 14 weeks gestation at a hospital, and her baby girl did not survive.

The woman told detectives she did not want to end her pregnancy, the warrant states, while Demeter wanted to end it. Demeter had previously told the woman he could obtain abortion medication online and offered to pay her $1,000 to terminate the pregnancy, according to the warrant. The woman refused the offer.

Investigators searching Demeter's home found a glass bowl containing white powder residue and evidence of a crushed white pill. Demeter admitted to investigators that he had ordered abortion medication online, according to the warrant, but denied the bottle he gave the woman contained abortion pills and told investigators he had given the pills away.

The Montgomery County District Attorney's Office scheduled a news conference Friday afternoon at which detectives were expected to share additional details about the case.
