BEXAR COUNTY — Judge Joel Perez declared a mistrial on May 19, 2026, in the Bexar County murder trial of Eric Vasquez, 48, after jurors could not agree on a verdict. The jury in Bexar County's 437th Criminal District Court, where Perez presides, had deliberated for two days in the case involving a suspected road rage shooting the previous year.

Jurors began deliberating at approximately 4 p.m. on Monday and were sequestered for more than five hours before resuming on Tuesday morning. They were unable to reach a unanimous decision on whether Vasquez was responsible for the death of Jay Morales, 41.

Vasquez was initially charged in connection with the death of Morales on January 21, 2025. If convicted, he could have faced a sentence of up to life in prison. During the trial, attorneys for Vasquez argued that he was acting in self-defense.

Officers were dispatched at 6 p.m. to the 6700 block of Spring Hurst Drive, according to the San Antonio Police Department. Police found Morales lying on the street with multiple gunshot wounds to his upper torso. He was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead.

Both men engaged in a verbal altercation while driving, which escalated as they followed each other, according to the San Antonio Police Department. Morales stopped his vehicle and opened his trunk, and Vasquez saw Morales holding a firearm. Vasquez, who also had a firearm, fired at Morales and struck him multiple times.
