Norwalk health inspectors cited seven restaurants, two businesses, one nonprofit and two schools with serious violations during April inspections. The citations covered issues including improper food storage, hand-washing lapses, missing thermometers and unsanitary conditions.

The Spot Deli at 69 Winfield St. received one priority violation because cleaning agents were stored on a shelf next to food products, one priority foundation violation because prepared foods in the cold holding unit were not date marked, and two core violations because utensils were stored on rear counters, tables and shelves and the cooling units lacked thermometers. The manager moved the cleaning agents and bottles away from food products during the inspection.

Guac Time Mexican Grill at 500 Connecticut Ave. was cited with one priority violation for raw chicken stored next to vegetables and ready-to-eat foods in the walk-in cooler. The manager placed the raw chicken on a separate shelf during the inspection. The restaurant received four core violations because hand sinks lacked paper towels; it had no certified food protection manager on site; foods were stored on the floor in the walk-in cooler; and rear prep tables and counters needed cleaning.

City Market Norwalk at 717 West Ave. was cited with one priority violation for improper hand-washing and a priority foundation violation because a bottled cleaning agent was stored in the walk-in cooler next to food products. The manager instructed employees to wash their hands and change gloves when performing different tasks, and the cleaning agent was moved during the inspection. The market received two core violations because the deli rear prep counter needed cleaning and wiping cloths were stored next to a slicing machine and on food counters adjacent to cutting boards.

China King at 280 Connecticut Ave. was cited with one priority violation because employees were not washing their hands when performing different tasks, and four core violations involving missing hand-washing sink signs, oil and grease stains on the front prep counter, unclean floor areas with missing tiles on the walk-in cooler floor, and wiping cloths stored on a rear prep counter.

Los Luceros Family Grocery at 42 Woodward Ave. was cited with one priority violation because cleaning agents and medication were stored on a rear shelf with spices and other food products. The manager moved the cleaning agents and medication to a separate location during the inspection. It received three core violations because a ceiling in the rear cooking area was in disrepair with flaking and peeling paint and rust stains; kitchen equipment was stored on unclean plastic bins; and a rear prep table with food debris needed cleaning.

Super 7 Food Market at 109 New Canaan Ave. was cited with a priority violation because raw chicken was stored above ready-to-eat foods and vegetables in the walk-in cooler. The manager moved the raw chicken to the bottom shelf during the inspection. The market received four core violations because utensils were stored in water below 135 degrees; hand-washing sinks lacked signs; cooling units lacked thermometers; and foods and liquids in plastic containers in the walk-in cooler were unlabeled.

Valencia Cocina at 164 Main St. was cited with a priority violation because eggs were stored above other food items in a walk-in cooler and three priority foundation violations for storing items in the hand sink, missing a consumer advisory reminder about food allergens, and not having food probe thermometers available. The restaurant received three core violations involving cooler temperature gauges, unlabeled food containers and in-use utensils stored in water below 135 degrees. The egg storage and utensil storage violations were corrected during the inspection.

Los Molcajetes Mexican Restaurant at 99 New Canaan Ave. was cited with four priority violations because beef was stacked too high; meat was left sitting out without being worked on; raw eggs were stored above vegetables and drinks in a refrigerator; and an employee was seen not using soap when washing hands.

Ponus Ridge STEAM Academy and Concord Magnet School at 21 Hunters Lane were cited with one priority violation because no sanitizer buckets were made during the inspection, and a core violation because dirty wiping towels were not stored in sanitizer. The violations were corrected during the inspection.

Priority violations must be corrected within 72 hours, priority foundation violations within 10 days, and core violations within 90 days.
