GLADES COUNTY, FLORIDA — A 19-year-old Mexican man died in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody at the Glades County Detention Center in Florida on March 16, 2025. Royer Perez-Jimenez was found unconscious and unresponsive in his cell at 2:34 a.m. local time, according to a statement from ICE.

Prison staff immediately began life-saving efforts after finding Perez-Jimenez unconscious. The death was determined by ICE as a presumed suicide, though the official cause remains under investigation, according to a statement from ICE.

Perez-Jimenez was arrested in January and charged with fraud for impersonation and misdemeanor resisting an officer, according to a statement from ICE. Perez-Jimenez had illegally entered the United States at an unknown date, officials said.

Upon admission to the detention center, he denied any behavioral health issues or concerns and answered "no" to all suicide screening questions, according to a statement from ICE.

The Government of Mexico requested more details about Perez-Jimenez's death, the foreign ministry said. "The Government of Mexico reiterates that these deaths are unacceptable and once again calls on immigration authorities to carry out a prompt and thorough investigation to clarify the circumstances that led to this death, determine responsibility, and establish effective guarantees of non-repetition."

Perez-Jimenez was the youngest person to die in ICE custody since Donald Trump returned to office and launched a nationwide immigration crackdown. More than 42 migrant deaths have occurred in U.S. immigration custody since January 2025, according to Detention Watch Network.

During Joe Biden's four-year presidential term, 24 deaths were reported in ICE custody, according to ICE statistics. Immigration raids have led to multiple migrant deaths. Two U.S. citizens were shot by U.S. immigration agents in Minnesota during immigration raids.
