Status AI announced $17 million in combined seed and Series A funding on May 19, 2026, with investors including General Catalyst, Y Combinator, LightShed Partners, and Abstract. The company said the capital will be used to scale its gamified social media platform, on which users role-play as characters in user-generated worlds.

The app, founded by Fai Nur, Amit Bhatnagar, and Pritesh Kadiwala, came out of stealth in 2025. Users create settings, stories, and characters through player interaction, with both multiplayer and single-player modes available.

"Status is built on the premise that the next generation doesn't want to watch stories. They want to engage with the stories and even live inside them," Nur said. "A user can become a celebrity with millions of followers, step inside their favorite show or book, run for president, or go viral on the internet."

Nur traced the idea to the launch of ChatGPT in 2022, saying "AI could finally let any user actually simulate any character, not just watch or talk about their favorite worlds, but live inside them." She added: "The role-play and immersion that fans had always wanted was suddenly possible at scale." The platform lets players pick one character as their first follower and earn more as the story progresses, according to Nur.

Nur said Status AI has seen more than 13 million worlds created and more than 5 million character profiles on the platform. Early adoption skewed toward a specific demographic: "Our early users were predominantly young women. This has consistently been the audience that decides which platforms become culture," she said.

The company is in discussions with entertainment companies about using the platform to cultivate fan engagement. "We're fielding interest from studios and streamers," Nur said. "They see Status as a way to develop audiences before bringing fans together in theaters or arenas." She described the product as using AI to create experiences that are "brand-safe, interactive, and endlessly dynamic."

Rich Greenfield, a partner at LightShed Partners, said "Every media company these days is desperately searching for ways to get consumers to live inside the worlds and characters they create." Natalie Dillon, an investor at Maveron, said "The platforms that combine intimacy, utility, and creativity in one ecosystem won't look like traditional social networks; they'll feel like multiplayer environments where people can build, buy, and belong all at once."
