SOUTH BEND — Two South Bend Police officers were hospitalized with injuries sustained during an arrest in northwest South Bend on Sunday, May 17. The officers were treated for a broken nose and a dislocated finger following a struggle with a suspect during a response to a domestic disturbance.

Officers responded to the 1600 block of Fremont Street around 9 p.m. on a report of a domestic disturbance, according to a police press release. When they arrived, they met with a woman who had a welt on the side of her head and said her brother had assaulted her.

The officers attempted to detain the suspect, 41-year-old Steven Fox. As officers tried to place Fox into handcuffs, he suddenly turned toward the officers and pulled his arm from an officer's grasp. Officers asked Fox several times to place his arm behind his back.

After officers warned Fox several times that they would use their tasers and he continued to resist, an officer deployed a taser. Fox continued to resist, ran toward one of the officers, struck him in the vest, and threw himself into the officer, knocking the officer to the floor.

Another officer pulled out her taser, which Fox reached for, and Fox punched the officer in the nose as she tried to grab one of his arms. Officers eventually detained Fox and put him in handcuffs.

One officer suffered a broken nose, and the other suffered a dislocated finger. Both officers were treated at the hospital.

The St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office charged Fox with two counts of resisting law enforcement as a Level 5 felony, one count of disarming a law enforcement officer as a Level 5 felony, one count of domestic battery as a Level 6 felony, one count of domestic battery as a Class A misdemeanor, and three counts of resisting law enforcement as a Class A misdemeanor. Fox is being held at the St. Joseph County Jail.
