LONDON — Arsenal beat Burnley 1-0 at Emirates Stadium in London on Monday to open a five-point lead at the top of the Premier League, moving closer to ending a 22-year wait for the title. Kai Havertz headed the only goal of the match, Arsenal's 18th from a corner in the league this season.

Arsenal could be crowned champions as early as Tuesday if Manchester City fail to win at Bournemouth. If City end Bournemouth's 16-game unbeaten run and then beat Aston Villa, Arsenal would secure the title with a victory at Crystal Palace on Sunday. A draw for Arsenal at Selhurst Park would allow City to win the title on goal difference if they win their final two matches.

The fixture was Arsenal's last home game of the season, and they entered it having held a two-point lead over City after victories against Newcastle, Fulham and West Ham, including a 3-0 win over Fulham. Arsenal have not conceded in their last four league games since losing to City the previous month.

Leandro Trossard struck the post from the edge of the area, and Bukayo Saka had a penalty appeal waved away after attempting to turn in a low cross from Havertz. In the second half, Havertz committed a studs-down challenge on Lesley Ugochukwu's calf. A VAR review did not upgrade his yellow card to a red. He was later substituted and replaced by Viktor Gyökeres.

Max Weiss was making his second career start in goal for Burnley. The visitors had taken two points from their last 10 league matches and had won just one of their previous 26 league fixtures, with a draw against Aston Villa on May 10. Burnley's defeat to City in late April sealed their relegation after one year in the top flight, and the club parted ways with manager Scott Parker after that defeat.

Arsenal also defeated Atlético Madrid on aggregate to reach the UEFA Champions League final, where they will play Paris Saint-Germain later this month. Saka scored the decisive goal in the tie against Atlético Madrid.
