Spirit Airlines ceased operations in the United States on May 3, 2026, ending service by the ultra low-cost carrier. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy rejected a $2.5 billion temporary financial aid request from the Association of Value Airlines on the same day the airline stopped flying.

The trade group had submitted its appeal to the Trump administration in late April 2026, seeking relief for budget carriers. Airlines for America opposed the request on the grounds that it would give budget airlines an unfair advantage. "And, in the long-term, sustaining businesses that cannot earn their cost of capital harms competition and consumers by making it more difficult for other airlines to compete," Airlines for America said.

In court, Spirit Airlines lawyer Marshall Huebner addressed the impact of the shutdown on travelers. "We apologize most specifically for those Americans who may now be priced entirely out," Huebner said.

Jet fuel prices have risen since the Iran war disrupted Middle East oil shipments 11 weeks ago, increasing airfares and associated fees across the U.S. commercial aviation industry. Consolidation was already underway in the U.S. budget airline sector before the recent increase in fuel costs and fees.

Spirit Airlines was an unsuccessful merger target of Frontier Airlines and JetBlue after its losses mounted following the coronavirus pandemic. Frontier Airlines, an ultra low-cost carrier with a business model similar to Spirit's, has begun expanding in former Spirit markets including Las Vegas, Detroit, Orlando and Fort Lauderdale.

Shye Gilad, a former airline captain and Georgetown University lecturer, said shifts in pricing strategy across the industry have eroded the position of discount carriers. "Dynamic pricing has taken away one of the last structural advantages that low-cost carriers had," Gilad said.

He said budget airlines must now compete on factors beyond price. "They can't just be the cheapest airline anymore," he said. "They have to be the smartest low-cost airline."
