SAN ANTONIO — Pastor Jimmy Robles of Last Chance Ministries led a prayer vigil on Sunday evening in a West Side parking lot in San Antonio to mourn two children believed to have been killed by their mother. A crowd filled the lot for the service, where he shared the names of the two children, who are believed to be five and seven years old.

The children were found dead inside a parked vehicle that had been set on fire. They were killed by their mother, Marlene Vidal, according to San Antonio police, who said a motive for the killings is still unclear and that mental illness may have contributed to the crime. Vidal is jailed on two counts of capital murder and one count of arson, with bond set at $2.1 million.

The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office has not released the identities of the children. Robles described them as two angels.

Robles said he drove by the scene on Friday, initially unaware of what had happened. After learning of the deaths, he decided to offer the community a way to come together to mourn and support one another. "I came later on that night, and I put a sign up there that says prayer vigil Sunday," he said.

People from across San Antonio and from outside the city attended to support the family of the children and honor the lives of the victims. A message at the vigil urged parents, guardians, and caregivers to reach out for help when they need it.

"I pray that if there's anyone that might be feeling really frustrated. There is a way out, all you do is pick up that phone," Robles said.

Among those who attended were David Segura and his wife. Segura said the couple have seven children, including one with disabilities, and that through prayer they can care for their family, each other, and themselves.
