TEHUITZINGO — Gunmen killed at least 10 people in an attack in the early hours of Sunday in Tehuitzingo, in the central Mexican state of Puebla. The victims included six men, three women and one child, all of whom were shot.

Nine of the victims died at the scene from gunshot wounds, prosecutors said, while one woman died while being transported to the hospital. Local authorities did not identify any suspects in the killings, and the motive for the crime remains unclear.

Six of the victims were members of a single family, Puebla state prosecutor Idamis Pastor said. The other four were workers, Pastor said.

Soldiers, members of the National Guard and police officers were deployed to the scene. Federal officials are investigating the case.

Puebla's public security agency said: "Operational actions will continue to preserve order and social peace in the state." Puebla Gov. Alejandro Armenta has not commented on the incident.

The attack followed other violent incidents in the state. In February, six people were killed in Huehuetlan El Grande, Puebla, and three people were killed in Puebla's capital after an attack on their vehicle. In August, authorities found six severed heads along a road linking the states of Puebla and Tlaxcala. In 2024, authorities in Puebla found seven bodies in a car on a main expressway, including five decapitated and one completely dismembered body, each bearing a message.

Central Mexico has experienced increased cartel violence recently. The violence has forced between 800 and 1,000 families to flee their homes.
