MACAU — The Macau Economic Association reported that its economic climate index recorded 6.4 points in March and 6.3 points in April, with the local economy remaining within a stable range despite external uncertainties and shifting consumer behavior. The association forecast that the index would stay between 6.4 and 6.6 points over the next three months, covering May through July.
Gross gaming revenue reached MOP22.7 billion in March and MOP19.9 billion in April, according to the association. Average daily gross gaming revenue stood at MOP729 million in March and MOP663 million in April.
The association said visitor arrivals continued to grow during the two-month period, and the leisure and hotel accommodation sectors remained active. Imports of goods remained at high levels.
The association warned that economic performance remained uneven across sectors. Indicators related to domestic demand and consumer confidence appeared weak as consumption habits shifted and external pressures persisted.
The loan-to-deposit ratio of local residents at banks fell below 45%. The association said the low ratio reflected cautious borrowing sentiment and weak investment appetite.
The residential property price index remained below 190 points. The association said that level suggested the real estate market was undergoing adjustment.
For the May-to-July period, the association expects the economy to benefit from tourism, concerts, sporting events, exhibitions and rising pre-summer travel demand. The association also urged continued attention to external risks and called for efforts to accelerate economic diversification and industrial upgrading, warning that Macau's economy remains relatively concentrated and vulnerable to global uncertainties.
