ATHENS, TENN. — Athens Police arrested 51-year-old Steven Wilkerson Jr. on May 17 and charged him with attempted first-degree murder, felon in possession of a weapon, and employment of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony after a woman was shot inside a residence on Fisher Street in McMinn County, according to the Athens Police Department. Wilkerson's bond was set at $750,000, according to the department.

Officers responded to a reported shooting on Fisher Street and located a 36-year-old woman who had been shot in her upper extremity, according to the Athens Police Department. The woman was transported to a regional trauma center for medical treatment, according to the department. The woman's identity was not released at the time, according to the department.

Officers determined that the suspect remained inside the residence and was believed to be armed, according to the Athens Police Department. The suspect was safely taken into custody after police issued verbal commands, the department said.

Wilkerson faces three charges in connection with the shooting. The charge of attempted first-degree murder is the most serious of the three, according to the Athens Police Department. The felon-in-possession charge indicates Wilkerson was prohibited from possessing a firearm at the time of the incident, according to the department. The employment-of-a-firearm charge relates to the use of a weapon during the commission of a dangerous felony, the department said.
