Milwaukee Brewers rookie Jacob Misiorowski threw a 103.6 mph fastball against the New York Yankees on May 8, the fastest pitch by a starting pitcher since Statcast began recording speeds in 2008. The 24-year-old right-hander struck out ten batters in the game, including Yankees slugger Aaron Judge twice and Cody Bellinger.

In the top of the first inning, Judge took a strike in his first at-bat. At that point, Misiorowski had thrown seven consecutive fastballs, each a strike and each above 100 mph. His third pitch in the at-bat was clocked at 103.1 mph and missed the low outside corner. The following pitch reached 103.6 mph, and Judge hit a line drive that was caught by a Brewers outfielder.

Judge struck out in the fourth inning and again in the sixth, the latter accounting for Misiorowski's tenth strikeout of the game. In the sixth inning, Misiorowski also threw a 102 mph fastball for a strike. "Misiorowski's fastball is one of the best I've ever seen," Judge said.

Against the Yankees, Misiorowski threw 41 pitches at 100 mph or faster, including ten consecutive such pitches. He threw ten pitches at or above 103 mph in the game. Since 2008, starting pitchers have thrown only three pitches at or above 103 mph, including one by Misiorowski in his previous start against the Washington Nationals, in which he threw 43 pitches at 100 mph or faster. In a start against the San Diego Padres, he threw 40 pitches at triple-digit speeds.

Misiorowski uses a four-seam fastball in over 60% of his pitches and regularly throws three pitch types. He releases the ball closer to home plate than any other major league pitcher.

In the first half of last season, after five appearances, Misiorowski was selected to the All-Star team; his earned-run average then increased in the second half. He exited two of his previous three starts this season due to cramps.

In 2008, major league pitchers threw 214 pitches at 100 mph or more. In 2025, they threw 3,701 such pitches. Higher pitching velocities increase torque on a pitcher's elbow, and over one-third of major league pitchers have ruptured their ulnar collateral ligament, requiring Tommy John surgery, which can have a recovery time of over a year.
