KNOXVILLE, TENN. — The Tennessee Department of Transportation is launching the Yellow DOT program to help drivers and passengers with medical conditions, with several enrollment locations now open in Knoxville. The program is available to any driver or passenger with a medical condition, an allergy or who takes daily prescriptions, according to the department.

The initial focus of the program was on senior drivers, the department said. It has since expanded to cover a broader range of participants who may need medical attention in the event of a roadway incident.

Enrollment sites in the Knoxville area include Knoxville AAA, Dayspring Family Care, North Knoxville AAA and THP Knoxville. A full list of enrollment sites can be found online.

At the enrollment site, participants will receive a Yellow DOT packet containing a Yellow DOT decal, a Yellow DOT folder and a blank medical information sheet. Participants will fill out the medical information sheet and take a personalized photo to keep in the glove compartment inside the provided yellow folder, according to the department.

Information in the Yellow DOT folder is not kept by any agency or person and will only be accessed by first responders in case of a roadway incident where emergency medical attention is needed, the department said. The decal, which participants place on their vehicle, is intended to alert first responders at the scene of an incident that a Yellow DOT folder with medical information may be inside the vehicle's glove compartment, according to the department.
